CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Eight families are homeless after an early Sunday morning fire ripped through condos in east Charlotte.

It happened around 3 o’clock at the Devonshire Condominiums off Albemarle Road.

Firefighters say when they arrived they saw heavy smoke coming from the building.

Everyone was able to escape ahead of the flames, including one woman who was trapped in an upstairs unit, who was coaxed into jumping to safety by police officers.

The Red Cross is working with the displaced families.

At this time the cause of the fire in still under investigation.
