CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Abused, abandoned, sick, and neglected horses: it’s a big problem in our area.

The  mission of the Horse Protection Society of North Carolina is to make the world a better place for horses -- through education, rescue, and rehabilitation.

HPS provides a sanctuary of last resort for unwanted, neglected, and abused equines.

HPS has trained investigators that perform on-going abuse and neglect investigations with the goal of educating the owners in proper care of their horses.

They only prosecute abuse cases when absolutely necessary.  When the owners are not interested in the humane care of their horse, the HPS offers to the take the horse for rehabilitation.

The Horse Protection Society of North Carolina was founded by Joan B. Benson, who joined us the morning on Larry’s Look.

Our chief photographer, Dan Robbins  and Larry spent an afternoon at the HPS.  Right now, there are 35 horses being rehabilitated at the facility -- which is near China Grove in Rowan County.

There’s no other place in our area that offers so much for these beautiful animals.

HPS of North Carolina is a non-profit and depends on the generosity of those who care about horses.

It takes over $10,000 a month to operate the facility plus hours and hours of volunteer help on the farm.  Horses are fragile animals and need a  lot of attention.

That’s why the HPS offers special courses in equine behavior, horse training, and ownership.
Here’s their website:  www.horseprotection.org.
