CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Nine students from Providence Day School recently traveled to South Africa for a service learning experience.

The trip was organized by the school’s Global Education office.  They visited Johannesburg, Pilanesberg Cape Town and Robben Island last month.

While there the students volunteered at Red Hill Preschool, which is in Red Hill Township, an informal settlement of about 1,500 displaced Africans and refugees living in poverty.

The SA Service learning trip attracts students that are committed to the service of others.

When they signed up for the trip, the teens knew they would be learn about the history of apartheid in South Africa and help people who still suffer from the consequences of apartheid.

What they didn’t know and could never have imagined, was the unique opportunity that presented itself one morning after they  had breakfast.

The group learned about 19 beached pilot whales and led the way in offering their assistance.

They dropped their backpacks and shoes on the beach and literally ran to help the suffering animals.

The whole group was in our studios this morning to tell their amazing story on Larry’s Look.
