CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte police arrested a man accused of trying to abduct a 7-year-old girl over the weekend.
Police charged Matthew Alejandro Cruz, 18, with second degree kidnapping, assault on a child under 12 and resisting arrest.
Police said Cruz grabbed the girl Saturday while she was playing, picked her up and ran behind an apartment building. The child screamed for help and was released. She was not injured.
On Wednesday police released the 911 call made by the girl's mother and father after the incident happened on Saturday. They spoke with dispatch for a little over three minutes.
"Someone tried to kidnap my 7-year-old," the woman told the 911 dispatcher. "My daughter and other children -- they were playing outside and there was a guy who tried, actually, picked her up and took her over to another building."
The 911 operator spoke with the mother for a minute before the girl's father got on the phone.
"I didn't see him," the father said of the suspect. "My daughter ran home and my other daughter showed me how he covered her mouth and tried to run with her."
The father went on to say the suspect ran into a "wooded area" behind the apartment complex where they lived.
Police arrested Cruz on Tuesday and he has a scheduled court date for Thursday.
