CONCORD, N.C. -- Two people are facing charges related to a robbery in Kannapolis on Monday morning.
Police say two armed men robbed the Jordan’s Hot Spot on South Main Street in Kannapolis around 4 a.m. They displayed handguns and demanded money; the victim complied and the men fled the business.
A short time later, a Concord Police Officer observed a suspicious vehicle whose occupants matched the description of those involved in the Kannapolis robbery. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Marietta Place, but the occupants fled the vehicle on foot into a nearby wooded area.
One suspect, who police identified as Johnny L. Steele, of Kannapolis, was caught by authorities after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg.
Steele was taken in to custody and transported to CMC Northeast Hospital.
The second suspect, identified as Michael A. Smith, of Concord, was found a short time later, police say. Smith is charged with robbery, and is currently being processed at the Kannapolis Police Department.
Warrants for Steele are in place, and he will be served upon the treatment of his injuries.
