MATTHEWS, N.C. – A two-car accident in Matthews killed a grandmother and her daughter late Wednesday night.

The wreck took place around 9:30 p.m. at Independence Boulevard and Matthews Township Parkway near the Matthews Festival Shopping Center.

Police say a Honda CRV and a Chevrolet Trailblazer collided.

Marie Crook, 62, and Jennifer Hunt, 37, of Charlotte were both killed in the crash.  Hunt's two children were also hurt in the wreck but are expected to survive, officials said.

Justin Jones, 28, of Matthews is charged with DWI and wreckless driving in the crash, and he remains in the hospital.  Police say additional charges will be filed.

"Mrs. Crook was traveling southbound and attempting to turn left onto Independence Boulevard when she was hit by Mr. Jones who was traveling northbound on Matthews Township Parkway," a Town of Matthews spokesperson said in a statement.

Hunt's two children in the vehicle at the time of the collision have been treated and released from the hospital.
