Charlotte Tractor has been around since 1968. In that time the Starita Road company has been the target of thieves.
But nothing prepared the owners for what they would see Monday morning.
"They took the most expensive and the ones that are the most popular, they knew exactly what they were doing," said owner Tim Cockerham.
Someone stole 14 lawn tractors including the big diesel type that landscapers use. In all $70,000 worth of equipment was taken.
"It's not somebody walking through the neighborhood saying, ‘Hey, let’s steal something,’ these guys are professionals," Cockerham expressed.
The tractors were located in the front of the company, behind a fenced-in area. The owners thought it was safe because all the posts are secured in concrete that is four-feet deep.
"There were multiple vehicles involved; there were multiple thefts surrounding the neighborhood-- several trailers, several pickups and they backed right up to us and used the stolen vehicles to rip the fences down," Cockerham said.
Cockerham is not optimistic that he will get his equipment back. He's frustrated that it will probably be sold for 25-cents on the dollar.
Cockerham also said that if people will stop buying stolen goods it would put the thieves out of business.
