TYBEE ISLAND, GA -- For this edition of Beaches on the Cheap, we’re going to a place you suggested to me on Facebook: Tybee Island.
Don’t let the 2.7 square mile size of Tybee Island fool you. This laid-back spot, just 20 minutes from Savannah is home to sand, sun and plenty of history. After all, it was claimed by the Spanish back in the 1500s.
Rates on Tybee really push our $150 budget. But if you don’t mind the drive, staying in Savannah can cost as little as $40 for a 1-star room, or for just under $100, a more comfortable 3-star accommodation.
For fun, a “must” is the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum. Nine-dollar admission can get you up the 178-steps to some gorgeous views and complimentary access to the museum.
For something a bit more active, or just a fun way to see the island, try Fat Tire Bike Rentals. Adult rates are $15 a day, or for double fun, $25 for a two-person tandem bike.
For a quick, casual bite, the locals seem to love Hucapoo’s. Cold drinks and an 18-inch pizza starts at $12, which is plenty to share.
Online user-generated review site, Yelp, shows one of the most popular cheap eats in the area is in Savannah. Zunzi’s features North African and French influences, resulting in mouth-watering sandwiches, or entrees, like curry stew. A full meal can be had for about $10.
