CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a deadly shooting involving an officer.

Investigators say Spencer Mims III, 55, was shot Sunday night on Cooper Drive in south Charlotte.

On Monday friends of the Mims family said they were too upset to speak about the incident. They called Mims a nice and thoughtful man who was an author and would do thoughtful things for his neighbors.

"He knew I was a single woman and didn't have a car...he would leave his car in (my) driveway so people wouldn't know," said a woman who only wanted to reveal her first name as Martha.

"He was a good, nice man.  He was a writer," she said of the 55-year-old.

Authorities say Mims' father requested officers to his home because he was having problems with his son.  When officers arrived they say Mims was holding a box cutter to his throat.

Authorities say Officer Michael Whitlock used his taser on Mims when he ignored orders to drop the box cutter.

Investigators say Mims then charged at officers with the box cutter and that's when Officer Jeremy Donaldson shot him.

Mims was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he died.

"We saw the dad leave at 10:30.  He doesn't usually drive that late at night," said TexAnn Lightner, who lives two houses from the Mims family. "First we heard--I heard yelling which…this is a very quiet neighborhood.

Officers Whitlock and Donaldson have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
