KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – One man is in jail and another is still on the run after a murder at a Kannapolis apartment complex Saturday.

Police arrested Demarcus Rashad Chambers, 24, and charged him with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.  He is in Cabarrus County jail with no bond.

Detectives are still looking for Logan Porter Brown, 22, for the same charges.

Brown and Chambers are accused of killing 21-year-old Casey Ray Wilkinson.

"We have a basic idea and we are still working on who knew who - because several others were involved,"  said Kannapolis Police Captain Patrick Patty.  "None of the released names earlier lived at the apartment and was leased to another.    We do know what the dispute was over, however not going to release at this time."

The murder charges against Brown were a surprise to Ashlyn Chewning, who lives in the apartment complex where the fatal shooting happened, and has known Brown since they were childhood schoolmates.

"He was just a really sweet kid -- very smart in school, and he just really seemed to have it together," said Chewning.

She said she was also surprised to see police show up at her apartment complex Saturday.

"It went from one police car to probably about 15 and a bunch of unmarked cars and an ambulance within 5 minutes," she said.

Chewning said she saw paramedics carry a stretcher upstairs, then come down with a still-empty stretcher a few minutes later.  That's when she knew it was bad.

"Just shock, was initially the main reaction for everybody," she added. "It was just really surprising."

Chewning said Brown had a good upbringing, including a private Christian elementary school in Concord.

He had started bodybuilding in the last year, and several facebook photos show Brown with a chiseled body and tattoos across his back and arms -- including a large cross on his back.

Mecklenburg County jail records show Brown was arrested last summer on a variety of drug charges, including trafficking ecstacy.

All of this is hard for Chewning to believe. She said Brown was always popular, especially with girls.  She shakes her head.

"It makes me want to cry honestly because, it's crazy."

Police had not released the identity of the victim late Sunday night, saying they had trouble finding relatives.

Kannapolis police ask that anyone with information about the crime or Brown call them at 704-920-2000, or call Crimestoppers at 704-932-7463 (CRIME).  Tipsters can also reach out with direct messages to Kannapolis911 on Facebook or @Kannapolis911 on twitter.
