CHERRYVILLE, N.C. -- Firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at a marble company in Gaston County late Sunday night.

The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. at the Gatza Marble on R and S Access Road in Cherryville.

At one point, more than 80 firefighters from across Gaston County were on the scene. Firefighters initially had the fire contained, but the chemicals caused it to reignite.

According Eric Hendrix, the Gaston County Fire Marshal, the building smoldered for hours.

Hendrix said the fire could burn for more than a day because of the chemicals involved inside the building.  He also said the building is a total loss.

They are investigating a cause, but because of the size and amount of damage, Hendrix said it will be difficult to narrow down where the fire started.

"It's been hard to fight the fire because of the environmental hazards involved in an industrial building," he said.

No one was injured.  About 12 employees worked at the building.
