CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One person is dead and another in the hospital following a crash in the University area Thursday afternoon.
It happened at East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Chancellor Park Drive around 3:30 p.m.
The crash involved a pickup truck and car. The driver of the truck, 61-year-old Ezzard Jones, was killed.
Police said Jones was traveling northwest on W.T. Harris in the left lane when he crossed the grassy median into oncoming traffic and collided with a Dodge Avenger driven by 28-year-old Marcus Sturdivant.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Sturdivant was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries.
Witnesses said that Jones was seen driving erratically for several miles before the crash. Police are still investigating the accident but said it appeared alcohol and/or a medical condition appear to be the main contributing factor in the wreck.
The collision resulted in major backup through rush hour.
