CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Today is National HIV Testing Day, an annual effort to encourage screening for the virus that causes AIDS.

In Mecklenburg County, there were 399 new cases of HIV in 2011; that's almost one new case each day.

Additionally, the county has the highest number of new cases of HIV in the state, more than double that of the next highest county.

Several organizations are coming together to stop the epidemic.  Carolinas CARE Partnership is teaming up with Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS to provide Free HIV testing at two Walgreens in Charlotte.

The two stores providing those tests are located at 3521 Freedom Drive and  4701 South Boulevard.

Testing events run Thursday and Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday from 9-2 p.m.
