BESSEMER CITY, N.C. -- A man mowing his front lawn was shot and killed by the boyfriend of his daughter Wednesday morning, according to Gaston County Police investigators.

Police identified the victim as Gary Campbell, who they said was shot in front of his home at 2039 Tryon Courthouse Road.

Investigators said he was shot by Robert James Lewis, who is the boyfriend of Campbell's daughter.

The two live in a house behind Campbell.

A family friend who did not want to be identified said the shooting was self defense and that Campbell was threatening to kill everyone.

That friend also said Campbell had beaten his wife in the past.

Investigators confirmed that Campbell's wife and daughter had a domestic violence protection order against Campbell that was in force at the time of the shooting.

Police would not give any details of the actual shooting but did ask for help from anyone who might have seen something while driving by at the home.

"We're just asking that they call us so we can question them about what they might have seen," said Asst. Chief Joe Ramey of the Gaston County Police.

If anyone has any information they are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-861-8000, or the Gaston County Police Department at 704-866-3320.
