MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- A local middle school teacher is accused of fatally stabbing a man on Sunday evening in Mooresville.

Mooresville police were called to a home off of Red Arrow Place around 6 p.m. after a reported stabbing. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered 43-year-old Ronald Ketchum suffering from a stab wound.

Ketchum was transported to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The alleged murderer is 42-year-old Dawn Bridget Kavanaugh, the reigning Middle School Teacher of the Year at Lakeshore Middle School where she has taught sixth grade social studies since 2010.

Kavanaugh has been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  Both students and their parents were alerted of the allegations at school on Monday, and extra counselors were on hand as well.

Kavanaugh has been with the school district since 2004 when she started at South Iredell High School.

A motive for the incident is not yet known.
