CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A chain link fence went up around the Thirsty Beaver Bar on Central Avenue this week.

NBC Charlotte spoke with co-owner of the bar Mark Wilson. He said the bar is renting the building and the property owner suddenly decided to put the fence up without explanation.

"The people that have built this community are being pushed out for quote-unquote progress," Wilson said.

Despite the inconvenience for customers the bar is open for business.

In fact, there was a pretty good crowd out there when NBC Charlotte stopped by Wednesday night.

Although the Thirsty Beaver is classified as a "dive bar", it's the highest-rated bar in Charlotte on Yelp.

NBC Charlotte reached out to the owner of the property John Hatcher, but we haven't heard back from him on why exactly he decided to put the fence up.
