CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Fire devastated a garden full of unique flowers on the UNC Charlotte campus last April, but students helped bring it back to life.

Orchids are some of the most exotic and beautiful flowers.  But the early morning electrical fire killed a lot of rare flowers.

“That was a big deal.  We lost hundreds of plants and some really special specimens,” said Paula Gross, the assistant director of the botanical gardens.

The structure itself was rebuilt pretty quickly, but rebuilding the actual garden took a lot longer.

“It took us pretty much this whole year to reacquire plants, go to other botanical gardens to design displays and build it,” Gross added.

Students pitched in and the greenhouse is blooming again, just in time for the annual valentine orchid sale.
