CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A tree that crashed into a townhome has displaced one family and has forced the evacuation of other nearby units.

Charlotte firefighters told NBC Charlotte that a large, old tree fell on a townhome at the Abbey Place Apartments near Park Road and Woodlawn Road around 10 p.m.

Nobody was hurt but firefighters said that the Red Cross will be sheltering two adults and a child in the unit that the tree landed on.

Firefighters also evacuated people that live in an adjacent building due to fears that other trees on the property could fall overnight as the area is expecting heavy rain and strong winds.

Rescue officials added that the tree likely fell due to over saturated ground and a wind gust.

In all, eight units is two buildings were affected.
