Wintry mix overnight

Updated yesterday at 10:39 PM

There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for tonight parts of the piedmont along I-40 into the mountians and foothills.

Overnight with the arrival of the precipitation the temperatures will be just warm enough for a very cold rain outside of the mountains. There could even be a mix of some sleet across the Piedmont before it all changes to rain later this morning morning. In the higher elevations there will be a wintry mix of sleet and snow before it briefly changes to rain this morning. Low temperatures in the Piedmont will be around 33°, in the mountains especially the high mountain valley temperatures will dip to around 30°. New Year's Eve day there will be cloudy skies and scattered showers with temperatures in the mid-40s. There will be lots of clouds and mild temperatures through New Year's Day with temperatures generally in the mid-upper 40s through Saturday.

Then the flood gates will open up to arctic air starting Sunday with a series of cold fronts, each one colder than the previous one, which means temperatures will be getting progressively colder next week. High temperatures will start near 45° on Saturday then near 40° Sunday and only in the mid 30s by Monday into Wednesday. The overnight lows will be dropping into the 20s this weekend but into the teens by Monday into Wednesday by far the coldest air of the season so far.
