WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A handful of North Carolina shelters are allowing people who refuse to leave their dogs and cats behind to bring them to safety ahead of Hurricane Irene.

WECT-TV reported that pet-friendly shelters are opening Friday evening at Noble Middle School and Dorothy B. Johnson Elementary School in New Hanover County. New Hanover County Animal Control says it's also willing to take in pets to keep them safe.

Other shelters are opening at West Brunswick High School, Burgaw Middle School in Pender County and Jacksonville Commons Middle School in Onslow County.

None of the shelters will take birds or exotic animals.
