Several cold air funnels were reported in North Carolina on Tuesday, one near the town of Rutherfordton and the second near Marion.

A cold air funnel will form when there is very cold air at the mid-levels of the atmosphere and warmer air developing at the surface.

There usually is minimal winds shear and they typically form near rain showers.

These funnels rarely reach the ground and will cause only minor damage.
