We just came through a really harsh winter and the same La Nina that gave us that harsh winter will have an impact on spring.

A La Nina is the cooling of the waters in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A typical La Nina spring means more severe storms. The last strong La Nina was in 2008 and there were 1,692 tornadoes in the United States that year.

There are a couple mini-tornado alleys in the Carolinas. We get quite a few tornadoes in northern Cleveland, southern Catawba County, Lincoln County and parts of northwest Gaston County. On average there could be four to five, if not more tornadoes in that area in a calendar year according to First Warn Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich.
