CHINA GROVE, N.C. -- A quick but powerful downburst caused a lot of damage in a China Grove neighborhood Friday evening.
"I was up in my house just watching all of our trees fall down," said Levi Brown.
Something fast and furious blew through a short stretch of Concordia Church Road. It was closed off to traffic when it was all over.
There were no serious injuries but trees were toppled and the roof was torn from a garage where the Brown family stored a number of vintage cars.
"Once we saw the first tree fall, we came down here because we seen all this and we were worried about my grandma," Brown said.
She was fine but it will take some time though before she forgets what she saw and heard.
"It sounded sort of like a train and it was very short, very quick," Linda Brown said.
Power crews from Duke Energy arrived almost immediately after the storm, while residents started to clean up. As they gathered to check on each other and talk, most said they had never experienced anything like it before.
"I was in the house and it was so fast. It was over before I knew what was happening," Linda said.
While there was damage on Concordia Church Road, other homes and trees were spared the brunt of the storm. Those vintage cars were, for the most part, fine, but the garage roof wound up wrapped around a tree in the front yard.
"It was so quick, I barely had time to get scared," said Levi.
Neighbors are just thankful that nobody was hurt.
