CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One family has been displaced after a large tree fell over onto its house.

It happened in the 200 block of Glenrock Drive on Saturday afternoon. The tree crushed the living room and kitchen of the house. Officials deemed it unlivable.

A house next door was also slightly damaged by the tree, but no major damage was done there. The fall did cut off power to both houses, but the house with only slight damage will have its power restored.

The Charlotte Fire Department said that one person was inside the house sleeping in a back bedroom, but was unhurt. The homeowner, who was at work, came home a short while later.

She has lived in the house for 13 years. Two children, one of which just returned from college, also live there.

The Red Cross is helping the family with temporary housing.

Officials say the recent weather conditions are the cause.
