Storms knock down tree, power lines in Matthews

A tree was knocked down and toppled power lines on Monroe Road in Matthews Friday morning.

MONROE, N.C. – Power lines and at least one tree fell victim to thunderstorms that rumbled through the Charlotte area Friday morning, officials said. 

According to Matthews Police, a tree was knocked down in the 10500 block of Monroe Road near Gander Cove Lane sometime around 6 a.m. Around 150 Duke Energy customers lost electricity when the tree took down some power lines, officials said. Duke crews on the scene told NBC Charlotte they hoped to have power restored by 8 a.m. for those affected. 

The storms made their way into the Charlotte area around 5 a.m. Friday, bringing heavy rain and a brilliant show of lightning to the Carolinas. 

The storms also knocked out electricity to some traffic lights on busy Charlotte roads.
