My daughter, Sydney, will celebrate her 6th birthday on February 22nd. She is in Kindergarten at Endhaven Elementary School. In October, she decided that since she “has so many toys”, she would rather her friends not bring gifts for her to her party. Instead, she would like for them to bring gifts for “the sick kids in the hospital”. I was certain that she would change her mind before her birthday actually arrived. A couple of weeks ago, we began planning her art party, since Sydney is a self proclaimed artist! She again brought up the idea about her friends bringing gifts for “the sick kids in the hospital”. Since we are having an art themed party, she decided to ask her friends to bring art supplies to donate to Levine Children’s Hospital. Word of her request has spread to friends and family. There have been several friends of family members who have been moved by her compassion and have been very generous in their donations in return. This seemingly simple request in the eyes of one sweet little girl has turned into more than I think she could have ever imagined. I really don’t think she realizes that this is a big deal at all.
As a mother, I am always proud of my children, but words cannot begin to describe how tremendously proud I am of Sydney. For a child at such a young age to have so much compassion for others and to make such a selfless request just brings tears to my eyes.
