For residents of Ashe and Watauga Counties, the 2009 Christmas Day Ice Storm brought back memories of hurricane Hugo's damage in 1989. There are many, many trees down because of the 1/2 to 1 inch layer of ice that accumulated overnight. Roads were blocked at times by downed trees and downed power lines. There are many people without power, and some feel that it may take time to fix the situation. It brings back memories of the trees and power lines that were brought down in the mountains of NC by the remnants of Hurricane Hugo, and the memory of several days without power. The trees with the most damage are seen in areas closest to the blue ridge parkway, which was also seen with Hugo. Hugo roared through the mountains in September of 1989 and that month was not very cold. This is the month of December, and it has been a very cold month for NC mountain residents. It is a sincere hope that power can be restored quickly and safely. Neighbors will again need to pull together to help clean up downed trees and to see that all neighbors without power have the supplies and food that they need.
