Christmas Rush comes to a standstill

The storm that put the icing on Christmas in Carolina caused power outages in Watauga County which slowed transportation and interrupted telephone service. Cell phone service was also affected. In an effort to find a "few bars" I hiked to the top of a hill behind my house. Although I still could not find a signal to make a call my dog and I were rewarded with a beautiful and surreal scene. The reason for the power failure became clear. Branches were encased and fencing was hung with a coating of ice that splintered trees like they were twigs.
