Julius Peppers uses his day off to help Florence victims

The areas visited by the Carolina Panther reminded him of his hometown of Bailey, which was about two hours away.

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — Carolina Panther Julius Peppers spent Tuesday in Robeson County, N.C. helping victims of Hurricane Florence.

Bryan Strickland, senior writer for the Panthers website, chronicled the defensive end's day on Twitter, starting in Lumberton at a supply distribution center.

Peppers talked with a homeowner in Maxton who can't move back into her home because it flooded twice during the storm. The Panther also had to wear a mask before going into another home to protect himself from mold exposure.

The areas he visited reminded Peppers of his hometown of Bailey, which was about two hours away.

"This is heartbreaking to see," Peppers said.

Peppers helped serve meals with Christian Aide Ministries in downtown Lumberton and helped a Baptist men's organization on a house rebuild.

Peppers, who played football and basketball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, partnered with Foundation For The Carolinas to establish the Julius Peppers Hurricane Relief Fund.
