SALISBURY, N.C. — Good economic news for Rowan County where Chewy, the online retailer of pet food and pet supplies, plans to build a 700,000 square foot distribution facility.
The new building will eventually employ 1,200 employees.
Rod Crider the President of the Rowan County Economic Development Commission called it a great day for Salisbury and the county.
“Twelve-hundred new jobs coming to our community and of course the spinoff jobs associated with that is estimated to be in excess of 4,000 jobs,” Crider said.
The fulfillment center will be built off of I-85 near exit 81 off of Long Ferry Road.
Crider believes Rowan County was picked by Chewy because there is a large workforce ready to fill those 1,200 job openings.
Crider says to win Chewy, Rowan beat out Spartanburg, South Carolina.
“They have had their share of wins in recent years so for us to compete with an economic powerhouse like that is something that we are really proud of.”
Groundbreaking is now scheduled for May 2nd.
