Wells Fargo sets date for employees to return to the office

Wells Fargo, one of the largest employers in Charlotte, will welcome most employees back to the office in mid-March, according to a memo sent to U.S. workers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wells Fargo announced this week that most U.S. workers will return to the office next month after pushing back their return several times during the pandemic.

In a memo sent to all American Wells Fargo employees, COO Scott Powell said the bank is targeting a hybrid flexible model starting March 14, 2021. Most employees, including those in customer-facing roles, are part of this first phase. Wells Fargo resumed its voluntary early return for U.S. staff and customer-facing employees on Wednesday, Feb. 9.

"This is a significant moment for us as we implement our new hybrid flexible model for certain roles, which emphasizes spending time together in the office and introduces hybrid work options for employees in most jobs," Powell wrote in the memo.

Wells Fargo began sending employees home from the office in March 2020 in response to COVID-19. Powell said close to 100,000 workers never left the workplace and thousands more returned early on a voluntary basis.

Employees were going to return to the office in January but that date was pushed back due to the omicron variant. Case numbers in North Carolina have been trending downward recently, and hospitalizations recently dipped below peak counts from last winter, according to analysis by WCNC Charlotte's Vanessa Ruffes
