All-inclusive playground coming to York County

After a years-long search for the perfect spot, organizers have decided where to put the park in York County.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — After a years-long search for the perfect spot, organizers behind an all-inclusive playground have decided where to put the park in York County.

All Play Together is the non-profit that’s been the driving force behind the project for the past two years. Organizer Lori Christison said construction at Trailhead Park in Tega Cay will start with the removal of the current playground.

“This equipment will be removed and be replaced with inclusive play equipment,” said Christison.

Inclusive means children with or without disabilities will all get to play in one spot. The kids who can’t walk or have special needs are not isolated.

“Our goal is to provide an inclusive playground that provides access and opportunity to individuals of all ages and abilities, said Christison. “So not only children in wheelchairs but parents in wheelchairs.”

After finally settling on a new home for the park, organizers are getting a better idea on how the final project will look. A rendering showed there’ll be features like wheelchair accessible swings and monkey bars. There will also be rubber floors for children who have trouble walking.

As the finishing touches are still being planned, organizers asked for your help to make sure the community gets a top-notch playing area.

“We are still fundraising,” said Christison. “Our goal is half a million dollars we are 60-65 percent of our goal.”

The new park is scheduled to open in 2019.
