CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Before the rain Thursday night, folks in Rock Hill had a chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine at a festival for a good cause.
The community celebration was a fundraiser for Kayla Alanis. Nearly two years ago, she was severely hurt when police said she was shaken by her babysitter.
Kayla was just 3-months-old when it happened.
"She's always gonna be in a wheelchair, not going to be able to walk, talk, she’s blind, it’s gonna be for life," said mom Judith Gracia.
Organizers hoped to raise enough money to buy the family a transport van that can accommodate her wheelchair.
At last check, they were able to raise nearly $13,000. That’s about halfway to their goal.
