Food banks help federal workers struggling during shutdown

The Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry announced all federal workers with government ID can get a 30-day supply of food.

NEWTON, N.C. — As the federal government shutdown continues through another week, local charities are offering to help federal workers impacted by it.

The Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry announced Monday all federal workers with a government ID can get a 30-day supply of food and financial assistance with bills.

"I could only imagine what it was like when I'm thinking about these federal workers who suddenly are still working, but they have no paychecks," Rev. Robert Silber said. "When your stomach is hungry or when the power is being shut off, there is no politics involved."

On the other side of the Charlotte region, Governor Roy Cooper told reporters the shutdown is stalling long-term hurricane recovery efforts, and it's preventing payments to farmers hurt by Hurricane Florence.

"The longer this goes, the more problems we're going to have with fundamental government services where we depend on federal funding," Gov. Cooper said.
