The new year started with tragedy in north Charlotte when a man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called to a home on Highlander Court just off Gibbon Road around 3 a.m. When police got to the house, they found a man, identified as Carnis Ferdinand Poindexter, 53, who was shot on the front porch. Poindexter was pronounced dead at the scene.

CMPD said detectives are still combing through evidence and a large crime scene.

"We're still in the early stages of the investigation, there's a tremendous amount of evidence on the scene," said Maj. Mike Smathers. "It will be a Herculean task, especially in the dark to comb through the evidence here."

CMPD has not released any suspect information but Smathers said officers have been called to the home in the past.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
