CMPD investigating bomb threat at local mosque

Just a day after a deadly mass shooting at a Pennsylvania synagogue, a bomb threat closer to home fueled fears at places of worship.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Just a day after a deadly mass shooting at a Pennsylvania synagogue, a bomb threat closer to home fueled fears at places of worship.

Police said someone called in a bomb threat to the Nation of Islam Mosque on North Cloudman Street on Sunday.

Earlier this week, there was vandalism at a Charlotte church, which is inclusive to the LGBT community.

Police said the bomb threat was called in at noon Sunday. NBC Charlotte obtained audio recordings showing how the dispatchers responded to the tense moments.

An hour before the bomb threat, there was a teaching scheduled about self-improvement at Nation of Islam, according to the mosque’s Facebook page.

Fortunately, no one was hurt at the mosque, but it happened just a day after a mass shooting inside a Pennsylvania synagogue. In all, 11 people were killed and six injured, including four police officers.

A few days earlier, a gunman killed an African American man and woman at a Kroger grocery store in Kentucky.

Police said before opening fire, the suspect had attempted to break into a predominantly black church, but was unsuccessful.

There was yet another disturbing incident at a place of worship earlier this week. A local church, inclusive of the LGBTQ community, was vandalized.

Someone spray painted “It’s OK to be white” at Wedgewood Church and “Free Kekistan”, which is a made up country popular on propaganda social sites.

Earlier this year, the pastor told NBC Charlotte the church had been vandalized seven times in the past seven years.

Right now, police are trying to track down whoever called in the bomb threat at Nation of Islam, but so far no arrests have been made.

NBC Charlotte asked CMPD if the case is being investigated as a hate crime, but they said they were not releasing information about that, because it’s an ongoing and active investigation.
