CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Officer Robert Milton was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse for giving alcohol to two young children.

On May 15, CMPD said it received information that the 56-year-old provided alcohol to a one and six-year-old child. Milton is the father of the one-year-old and was in a prior relationship with the mother of the six-year-old.

Through the investigation, CMPD gathering evidence and presented the case to a magistrate who then issued criminal summons and served Milton Friday afternoon.

“I am disappointed by this incident," said Chief Kerr Putney. "As we honor the men and women in law enforcement this week, it is important that the community understands the overwhelming majority of police officers serve with integrity. Officers who betray their oath and break the law will be held accountable for their actions.”

Milton was assigned to the airport division and has been placed on unpaid administrative leave. He was sworn in as a CMPD officer in May 2012.
