CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect in a series of armed robberies in Charlotte was killed in a crash while driving a stolen vehicle in Lancaster Thursday morning, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police received a call about an armed robbery in the 600 block of East 8th Street in uptown around 3 a.m. The victim told dispatchers that two armed men demanded his vehicle, a 2004 Lexus SUV, before speeding away from the scene.

A little before 3:45 a.m., CMPD was called to an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven near the intersection of Monroe Road and Washburn Avenue. The clerk told officers that a suspect entered the store, pulled out a gun and robbed the store. The suspect jumped into a vehicle with another person and drove away from the store.

A few minutes later, CMPD was called to a Circle K in the 9100 block of Monroe Road for another armed robbery. The clerk told police the suspect entered the store and robbed him at gunpoint.

Officers determined the suspects in both gas station robberies were responsible for the uptown robbery, as well. Detectives received a report that the suspects also robbed a 7-Eleven on West John Street in Matthews.

Around 5 a.m., CMPD were told that the stolen Lexus SUV was involved in a crash in Lancaster, South Carolina. The driver, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, identified as Daniel Hughes, was taken to the hospital for treatment. Detectives are working to obtain warrants against Hughes for his arrest.
