Man charged in northwest Charlotte murder

CMPD is investigating after a 25-year-old man was shot and killed in northwest Charlotte Thursday night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have charged a man in connection with a homicide in northwest Charlotte Thursday night.

CMPD responded to a reported shooting in the 300 block of Rhyne Station Road just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the victim, identified as 25-year-old Matthew Duke Gibbons, in the front yard of a home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Gibbons was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. Gibbons’ homicide was one of three shootings CMPD responded to in just over one hour Thursday night. In one of the incidents, a 13-year-old boy was robbed at gunpoint by a group of people.

On Friday, CMPD announced that they had charged Willie Devon James Jr., 28, with murder of Gibbons. He is charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail.
