GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- One person was killed after state troopers said a driver fell asleep on a Gaston County highway Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Dallas-Cherryville Highway and Mauney Road. Emergency officials said two vehicles were involved.
Tuesday's crash marks the third drowsing driving-related death in the Charlotte region in less than a month.
One of those crashes happened the day before Thanksgiving when troopers said Cecil Dellinger dozed off behind the wheel and crashed head-on into another car in Lincoln County.
The impact killed the other car's driver and sent three passengers to the hospital.
Dellinger's now charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
"Someone who's sleepy is just as dangerous as someone who's impaired by alcohol or drugs," Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Futrell said.
