Gyms on alert after series of thefts

Deputies said surveillance footage at a Food Lion shows the woman purchasing $600 worth of gift cards with the stolen credit cards minutes later.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify a woman accused of stealing a wallet and key from a local gym.

Deputies said between 5:50 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Monday night, a woman is suspected of taking a wallet and key from a locker at the Planet Fitness off Crossroads Plaza in Fort Mill.

Deputies said surveillance footage at a Food Lion on Regent Parkway shows the woman purchasing $600 worth of gift cards with the stolen credit cards minutes later.

Trent Faris, public information officer for YCSO, said he encourages people to make sure any valuables are hidden and locked safely in their car outside the gym or secured in a locker inside during a workout.

"You may think that your bag or your items may be safe right there in the bench in the locker room or something,” Faris said. “Don't take that chance."

Faris said the sheriff’s office sees these crimes of opportunity happen all too often, and they could be easily prevented.

"Just take that extra second to make sure your items are safe because one second could save you a lot of heartache,” Faris added.

If you can identify the person in the surveillance pictures, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers of York County or the YCSO at 803-628-3059 and ask for Dep. Aaron.
