Police are on the scene of a reported shooting on a road near the Eastridge Mall in Gastonia. Officials believe a man pulled into the mall parking lot to seek help after he was shot on a nearby road.
Gastonia Police got a call to respond to the mall around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Gastonia Police confirmed to NBC Charlotte's Brandon Goldner that a man was shot in the thigh and later taken to CaroMont Regional Hospital.
A Gastonia Police spokesperson said in a press release that detectives believe the shooting may be a case of road rage, and the shooting happened on New Hope Road or I-85.
Jose Chavez is the victim's friend. Chavez said he raced to the mall shortly after hearing his friend got shot.
"He has a good heart," Chavez said of his friend. "He's a really good person man, and it gets on my nerves that they shot him."
Police have not released any suspect information or announced any arrests.
Gastonia Police believe the gunman may be driving an SUV, possibly a dark green or gray Jeep Cherokee.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the department at 704-866-6880 and ask for Detective Whitlock.
