BELMONT, N.C. -- Police in Belmont are searching for the suspect who robbed a convenience store Tuesday morning at gunpoint.

Around 6:20 Tuesday morning, police say a man entered the side door of the Murphy USA convenience store in the 100 block of Caldwell Farm Road.

The suspect jumped behind the counter and displayed a silver handgun and forced the cashier to open the register and the safe.

An undermined amount of cash was stolen during the robbery, and the cashier was not injured.

Police say the suspect fled the scene in a silver Mitsubishi truck, which was later recovered on the I-85 N ramp.

The suspect is described as a black male in his early-20s, standing about 6-feet-tall and having a slender build. He was last seen wearing a tan hoodie, black jeans and tan work boots. Police say the suspect appeared to be dressed as a construction worker, as he was wearing a red hard hat, orange traffic vest and work gloves.
