CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are investigating after a Pizza Hut employee shot and killed a robber early Sunday.

Around 1:30 a.., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a call at the Pizza Hut on Freedom Drive. They say three people were robbing the business when an employee shot and killed one of them. The other two suspects fled and are still on the run.

"You’ve got drug dealers, drug users, everyone wants that first fix and they’re willing to do anything for it," resident Shamika Johnson said. "It's very unsafe around here and I definitely think businesses around here need to carry handguns for their safety and other people's safety."

Already this month, there have been 10 robberies, thefts, and burglaries just in that 1300 block of Freedom drive.

People who live in the area say they're not surprised.

"It's crazy, people can’t go to their own car without getting robbed," neighbor Darius Badie said.

Police have not said if the employee who killed the robber will face charges.

"I got shot about two years ago at the same Pizza Hut," resident Shanequia Jant said. "There was chaos in the parking lot, some shots fired, I was running trying to get my little sister and I was shot in the leg."

Jant says she believes businesses in that area should have firearms.

"Maybe just the managers," she suggested. "As long as they have their certifications."

Pizza Hut has a no gun policy that varies by location. They have not commented about this particular store.

"I would have done the same thing without a doubt or hesitation, it's either my life or yours," Johnson said. "Kill or be killed."

The Pizza Hut location is closed for now and that employee is on temporary leave.

If you know anything about the other two suspects, you were asked to call Crime Stoppers or the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
