Police: Gunman opens fire at East Charlotte Elementary drop-off line

Lawrence Orr Elementary School in east Charlotte was on lockdown after reports of shots being fired in the school's parking lot Monday morning.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lawrence Orr Elementary School in east Charlotte was on lockdown after reports of shots being fired in the school's parking lot Monday morning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the suspect opened fire and that no one was hurt. A vehicle was hit with multiple shots during the incident.

Officers believe the suspect and target knew each other and that the shooting was not random. CMPD has not identified a suspect or released any suspect information at this time.

No one was hurt during the shooting, according to CMPD.

“Makes me so nervous,” said mom Donna Hamer, who was about to drop her son off when the shooting broke out. She said instead, she brought him home. “I would rather be safe than sorry,” she said.

Dad, Terry Hall said moments after the school went into a lockdown, he received a text from his daughter.

“Because she didn’t know. She don’t know, like we texted asking her, ‘what was going on?’ and she said she didn’t know,” said Hall, who said he hopes, “that they catch him, definitely."

Lawrence Orr Elementary principal Kimberly Vaught sent the following message to parents Monday morning:

"Good morning Lawrence Orr families, this is Principal Vaught with important information. Safety and security is important to me. This morning during arrival time we went on lockdown due to police activity on the street out in front of the school. Police are investigating reports of shots being fired. Everyone at Orr is safe and no one was injured. This did not involve anyone from the school. I will keep you updated with any further information when it becomes available. Thank you for your involvement with your child’s education at Orr."
