Police investigating fatal crash on North Tryon Street

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police said nobody else was in the vehicle at the time.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives are investigating a fatal crash that happened late Saturday night. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said it happened in the 7000 block of North Tryon Street at Kemp Street.

One vehicle was involved in the crash. It happened at 11:25 p.m.

An adult man was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus at a high rate of speed traveling east on I-85 Connector when he struck the center median and lost control. The Ford then travel through the intersection of N. Tron Street, stuck a pillar of the light rail bridge connector and overturned onto the roof. Medic responded to the crash and pronounced the driver deceased at the scene. 

The victim was identified as 50-year-old John Westerville Johnson. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to CMPD.

Northbound lanes of North Tryon were shut down in response, but drivers were able to work their way around the scene by cutting through parking lots.

CMPD said more information will be released once detectives are able to conduct the investigation at the scene.
