Suspects caught red-handed breaking into ATM

The robbery was a failed attempt and officers caught the suspects driving away from the scene.

ROCK HILL, South Carolina — Two York County men are facing more than 30 years in prison after being caught red-handed trying to break into an ATM.

The failed robbery happened in the Bi-Lo Shopping Center on East Main Street in Rock Hill early New Year’s morning.

Police say a Wells Fargo security guard watched every single move as two men masked in bandanas attempted to pry open the stand-alone ATM.

According to police, 18-year-old Brandon Elliott and 20-year-old Stephen Brehm used construction tools in hopes of getting to some cash.

The robbery was a failed attempt. Officers caught the suspects driving away from the scene.

“A description of the suspects matched the descriptions of the subjects inside the new video,” said Captain Mark Bollinger, spokesman for the Rock Hill Police Department.

Police say when they caught up to Elliott and Brehm they found several construction tools in the car and one of the suspects, “still had their bandanna on,” according to Bollinger.

Brehm and Elliott are facing several charges including criminal conspiracy and safe-cracking.

If convicted, the safe-cracking charge alone is a 30-year sentence, meaning the men could be in prison up until their 50s.
