Woman hurts two workers after taking off with impounded car, police say

The employees at Skyline Towing and Recovery said they couldn't give her the car because it belonged to a rental company.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman trying to take a car from an impound lot hurt two workers in the process, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

The incident started around 11 a.m. Wednesday at Skyline Towing and Recovery on Orr Road.

The employees said the woman wanted the car back, but they would not give it to her because it belonged to a rental company. That’s when things escalated.

Officers said the suspect drove the car into a chain link fence as an employee was trying to close it.

NBC Charlotte obtained a copy of the 911 call which revealed how the dramatic chain of events began.

“I told the girl that was driving it that she couldn’t pick it up,” the 911 caller told the dispatcher.

Then the 911 caller described how nothing would stop the woman from taking the impounded car.

“She got in the vehicle and drove through the gate and hit my daughter with the car,” the 911 caller said.

“I fell on the ground, but I jumped right back up because I was in shock,” said 18-year-old Mykala Mathis, an employee at Skyline Towing.

Mykala was with her boyfriend, 19-year-old Hunter Culpepper, who was trying to close the gate at the time.

“My hand got smashed between the gate,” Culpepper told NBC Charlotte. “She just hit the gate and went through it; she just didn’t care.”

“I already verified through Hertz that they didn’t want it released to her,” the 911 caller said to the dispatcher.

“We told her she couldn’t get the car, she was really mad,” said Culpepper.

“She just wasn’t going to take no for an answer,” said Mathis.

Mathis and Culpepper were taken to the hospital. Mathis said she’s still dealing with back pain. Culpepper told NBC Charlotte he has a possible fracture in his hand.

“You’ve got to take other people’s life into consideration,” said Culpepper.

“Now, she’s in more trouble than it had to be," said Mathis. “She really hurt people; she shouldn’t have done that. It wasn’t a smart idea.”

Police said no arrests have been made.
