CONCORD, North Carolina — In 2011, many in the Carolinas were excited as filming for the movie The Hunger Games took place in the area, at one point with high security at the Phillip Morris plant in Concord.

This former filming location for the popular franchise is now scheduled for demolition, Bootsmead LeaseCo says.

Demolition plans at the former manufacturing and distribution facility at The Grounds at Concord are planned to begin within the next 30 days.

In consultation with state and local officials, the owners decided to clear the site in hopes of appealing to potential users or prospects interested in Concord and the Charlotte area.

The facility totals 3.5 million square feet and covers approximately 500 acres. The demolition is expected to take the balance of the year.

Partners with Bootsmead said they believe removing the plant will create opportunities for other "job creators" to use the area, which encompasses just over 2,000 acres.

As many other companies bring jobs to the area, officials hope that this area will follow suit for economic development in the state.

The release stated that demolition of the plant will not impact economic development efforts.
