What's Going Around? Bug bites and summer colds

Doctors say germs are easily spread in crowded areas, so keep that in mind as you're traveling this summer.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For this week's What's Going Around, we'll start at Novant Health Midtown Family Medicine. They're seeing an increase in bug bites and coughs, but also something you might also be dealing with -- the office says more and more patients are coming in not knowing if their symptoms are from allergies or the common summer cold.

It's similar circumstances at Novant Health Blakeney Family Physicians. This office is seeing cases of non-specific viral illnesses, things like summer colds and stomach bugs. They're also treating a good bit of sinus infections, as well as a lot of rashes -- whether it's poison ivy, swimmer's itch from the beach, from bug bites, or the heat.

At Novant Health Indian Land Primary Care, there's been an uptick in viral and bacterial respiratory infections.

Here's what's interesting to note -- many of the cases are with patients who recently got back from a vacation either out of state or out of the country.

The reasoning behind it makes sense. The doctors say germs are easily spread in crowded tourist areas, so keep that in mind if you're headed out of town -- and that's what's going around.
